It Costs To Do Nothing!

In the last quarter, I’ve trained hundreds of people on the basics of personal and professional leadership. When asked, an overwhelming 99% said they thought studying the type of material presented would help them and help their company achieve better results. They were right. According to Saratoga Institute, most organizations are operating with a 5% to 10% productivity loss that better leadership practices could eliminate. They also found that people leave companies for a variety of reasons closely related to leadership competencies – often those we call the ‘soft skills’.

• Lack of respect from or support by supervisor (13%)

• Supervisors lack of leadership skills (9%)

• Poor employee relations with a supervisor (4%)

• Lack of recognition (4%)

• Supervisor incompetence (2%)

Your personal development and the professional development of a companies’ leaders takes time, money and effort and so, is often dismissed as unnecessary. Yet according to Ken Blanchard Co. it’s estimated that millions of dollars are lost due to 3 key areas – employee productivity, employee turnover and poor customer satisfaction.

What I’ve experienced in my discussions with leaders is that we are quick to say others could use leadership development but often do not think we should invest in ourselves. This couldn’t be further from the truth. EVERYONE needs a growth plan! It will not be the same growth plan, but everyone needs continual growth to stay engaged, happy and to reach your potential.

Growth doesn’t happen accidentally and it isn’t accomplished merely by working hard. That’s what I always thought, keep your head down, put in the hours of sweat equity in and you’ll get there. Not true, you need to be intentional. In a quote by James Allen ‘s As a Man Thinketh, he writes “People are anxious to improve their circumstances but are unwilling to improve themselves; they, therefore, remain bound.” Don’t assume you will automatically grow. It’s easy when you are in college, you take a class, there is someone teaching you and then you take a test. There is a measuring stick to say you’ve learned something. What happens after that? Who will ensure that you continue to learn, grow and become the person you dream of?

So, how do you do that? Random growth occurs throughout our lives with experiences. It is not deliberate and all too often they are difficult lessons. The kind of intentional growth that helps us to become the friend, spouse, parent or leader we want, comes by investing in yourself. Time, effort and money. “But it’s just not the right time,” you say. The Law of Diminishing Effect states ‘The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.” When I was young I heard my grandmother tell someone “If you wait to have a baby until you can afford it, you’ll never do it.” It’s much the same with intentional growth. If you wait to invest in your growth until the time is just right, you’ll never do it.

“I have to find the perfect way before I start”. No, you don’t. You will never know if what you invest in will be the perfect thing for where you want to go. What I do know is that if you don’t start you’ll never find out. Just get started on your growth journey, even if you don’t feel like. I have news for you, the idea of motivation is a trap. Motivation doesn’t just show up when you need it. If that were true I’d have been thin my whole life. I find that when I don’t know what’s coming I am often afraid, what if I make a mistake, what if everyone around me is so much better than me? I hope you do make mistakes and lots of them. Failing forward is the new definition of success. If you’re not failing you’re not learning. And my prayer for you is that you are in a room that feels intimidating and everyone IS better than you. If you are the smartest person in the room – you’re in the wrong room.
